GaitWay to the Brain: ManeGait therapist Robin Harwell's feature article on Neuroplasticity

We are honored and excited to share that ManeGait GaitWay therapist and visionary behind the GaitWay to the Brain program, Robin Harwell, MA, CCC-SLP, has been featured in the Winter ’25–’26 issue of Equilibrium, the online magazine and journal of the American Hippotherapy Association (AHA). Robin’s article, titled Building the Brain Using ‘Bottom Up’ and ‘Top Down’ Neuroplasticity,” provides insight into how neuroplasticity concepts can strengthen brain-body connections and support potential improvements in overall functional development.

In her article, Robin explores the foundational principles of neuroplasticity and demonstrates how these concepts can be intentionally applied through a series of structured activities and specialized equipment. She shares practical examples of how the GaitWay to the Brain program incorporates repetition, sensory input, and purposeful movement to support stronger connections between the brain and body in both children and adults with a variety of diagnoses. Supported by research from Texas Woman’s Universityand direct observation, Robin has witnessed and supported positive improvements in learning, attention, and functional abilities among GaitWay participants.

Robin’s work has been instrumental in shaping the GaitWay to the Brain program at ManeGait, which incorporates brain-building exercises into the framework of equine therapy to increase outcomes for riders.

Her featured article reflects years of hands-on experience, research, and dedication to helping riders and GaitWay participants reach their fullest potential. It also reinforces ManeGait’s commitment to evidence-based practices that strengthen both body and mind. We are incredibly grateful for Robin’s leadership and passion to share her knowledge with the therapeutic community.
